I've recently decided to get into running. It just seems like one of those things you can't make an excuse for. If you have 2 feet, you can run.
I've always tried running while at the gym, but I could never get into it. My legs would start hurting after just one minute, I was bored, I couldn't keep my balance on the damn treadmill so my feet were always crossing. But, regardless, I thought I'd give running outdoors a try.
The first thing I did was try to figure out where the pain was coming from. I watched a few videos on YouTube on proper running form, and figured it out. I was a horrible heel striker, and I slouched terribly. Okay, easy fix.
Yesterday was my first run. The loop I live on is just under a half mile, so I decided to do that twice to start. I was so nervous about people seeing me but I threw on some shorts and a tshirt, laced up my Nike frees, and left anyway. I got 2 apps on my phone. Endomondo to track my distance and pace, and couch to 5k to use as a starting point. Well, I ended up ignoring couch to 5k because SURPRISE it was too easy. I managed to do a 13:28 mile. Pretty slow, right? Yeah well, I walked about half of it. I'm not very fit. But compared to an 18 minute mile 2 months ago (on the treadmill), that's awesome. Maybe it's all the walking I've been doing?
I got home from my run feeling great. And the best part? I didn't even care who saw me. Not even when the old man watering his garden groaned at me for upsetting his dog. Not when a few kids stared at me when I ran past. I just felt good about myself and what I was doing and it felt so freeing to just RUN.
I really enjoy running, and I really don't wanna stop.
